The body of information presented in this paper is directed to ecologists concerned with the effects and economic impact of sulfur dioxide on forest growth. Investigations were carried out over a ten-year period, 1953–1963, in the Sud-bury smelter district of Ontario, where three large smelters discharge annually approximately 2,000,000 tons of sulfur dioxide gas into the surrounding atmosphere. The study was designed to determine the long-term chronic effects of sulfur dioxide on yield, growth, and survival of plant life. Since eastern white pine is the most susceptible coniferous tree to sulfur dioxide injury, it was selected as the indicator tree to determine the degree and extent of injury in the Sudbury area. Tree data accumulated from the sample plots were correlated with records of atmospheric sulfur dioxide monitored continuously during the growing season by a network of ten strategically-located Thomas autometers. Based on the degree of injuries exhibited by the trees, and on air sampling records of sulfur dioxide, the Sudbury area was segregated into three fume zones: Inner, Intermediate, and Outer. An estimate was made of the loss in income suffered by the owners of wood or the producers of wood products in the Sudbury area as a result of sulfur dioxide air pollution, by utilizing the white pine volume growth loss data  相似文献

Human activities threaten the biodiversity of aquatic mammals across the globe. Conservation of these species hinges on the ability to delineate movements and foraging behaviors of animals, but gaining such insights is hampered by difficulties in tracing individuals over their lives. We determined isotope ratios in teeth (87Sr/86Sr, 13C/12C, and 18O/16O) to examine lifelong movement and resource-use patterns of a unique freshwater population of a wide-ranging pinniped species (harbor seal [Phoca vitulina]) that resides in Iliamna Lake, Alaska (U.S.A.). This population's potentially unique migratory behavior and use of different trophic resources are unknown. The isotope ratios we measured in teeth showed that seals were born in the lake, remained lifelong residents, and relied principally on resources produced from in the lake, even when seasonally abundant and nutrient-dense spawning anadromous fish (i.e., sockeye salmon [Oncorhynchus nerka]) were available in the lake. Our results illustrate how serial isotope records in teeth, particularly 87Sr/86Sr ratios, can be used to quantify how coastal mammal populations exploit both freshwater and marine ecosystems. Understanding lifelong patterns of habitat and resource use is essential information when designing effective conservation plans for threatened coastal mammals. We present the Iliamna Lake harbor seals as a unique case study into how isotope records within teeth can help reveal the cryptic ecology of such a population residing in an intact ecosystem. The results also provide critical baseline information for the Kvichak River system, which is facing an uncertain future due to proposed large-scale industrial development and a rapidly changing climate.  相似文献

A field test was conducted to determine if ozone pollution adversely affected the chlorophyll content and seed yield of soybean. Eight soybean cultivars were grown to maturity in test plots in central New Jersey; one-half of the plots was treated with an antioxidant (ethylenediurea) to protect the plants from the effects of ambient ozone and one-half was left untreated. Periodic chlorophyll measurements revealed no significant difference between EDU-treated and untreated plots during the major part of plant growth. The absence of a yield effect predicated on the normal chlorophyll content was corroborated by actual total seed measurement. Our results did not support predictive models that forecast a significant yield reduction from a 7-h seasonal mean of 0.058 ppm 03, but agreed with results obtained previously in Maryland and Georgia.  相似文献

An evaluation was conducted to establish the feasibility of a Natural Food Resources Bank (NFRB), in the form of forestry or grassland, to achieve both continuous food production and an accumulation of primary nutrients in living perennial plants. The development of an NFRB protects our living environment from deterioration (especially soil erosion) by increasing the surface coverage of the world's land, even in mountainous areas. Additionally a functioning NFRB enhances food sustainably and security, representing a tangible and renewable food resource production system. Research has identified the prospects of cultivating the NFRB in the form of forestry and also grassland. The review investigated the distinct differences of an NFRB from a range of approaches and discusses the environmental advantage and feasibility of cultivating NFRB. The ability of the NFRB to realize sustainable food resources production for ensuring food security is evaluated in terms of environmental and economical feasibility. A NFRB can attenuate climatic change by increasing CO2 absorption and fixation. It is worth considering the replacement of the annual food production system by the NFRB (especially in steeplands) in environmental law, and replacing the policy of maintaining annual food reserves by the NFRB in food security policy.  相似文献

A soil drench of [Formula: see text] (EDU) (150 ppm) applied to 'Progress No. 9' pea plants 24 h before an acute ozone exposure (0.25 ppm, 4 h) completely protected the foliage from visible symptoms normally induced by the pollutant. In the absence of ozone, EDU-treated plants were found to emit the same amount of C(2)H(4) as plants not treated with EDU. Based on this evidence, EDU-induced tolerance to ozone could not have been attributed to the prevention of an interaction between ethylene and ozone (sensu Mehlhorn and Wellburn). In the presence of ozone, EDU-treated plants did not emit the burst of C(2)H(4) that normally occurs (sensu Craker), extending the observation that EDU-treated plants do not exhibit the adverse physiological responses normally caused by ozone. The classic C(2)H(4) biosynthesis inhibitor aminoethoxyvinylglycine (AVG) did not prevent ozone phytotoxicity, although it significantly reduced ethylene emission from the ozonated tissue.  相似文献

Measurements of the defecation rate of Salpa thompsoni were made at several stations during two cruises west of the Antarctic Peninsula in 2004 and 2006. Rates were quantified in terms of number of pellets, pigment, carbon and nitrogen for a wide size range of both aggregate and solitary salps. Measured defecation rates were constant over several hours when salps were held at near-surface conditions from which they had been collected. The defecation rate per salp increased with both salp size and the ambient level of particulate organic matter (POM) in the upper water column. The weight-specific defecation rate ranged between 0.5 and 6% day−1 of salp body carbon, depending on the concentration of available particulate matter in the water. Carbon defecation rates were applied to biomass estimates of S. thompsoni to calculate daily carbon defecation rates for the populations sampled during the two cruises. Dense salp populations of over 400 mg C m−2 were calculated to produce about 20 mg C m−2 day−1, comparable to other major sources of vertical flux of organic material in the Southern Ocean. Measured sinking rates for salp fecal pellets indicated that the majority of this organic material could reach deep sediments within a few days, providing a fast and direct pathway for carbon to the deep ocean.  相似文献

The yields of eleven commercially grown soybean cultivars were compared in ethylenediurea (EDU)-treated and non-treated field plots in New Brunswick, New Jersey, over a 4 year period. No statistically significant difference between treatments was found for any cultivar; the inference being ambient ozone did not adversely affect soybean yield. Succeeding field experiments supported this interpretation of the data. 'Sanilac' white bean, a legume known to be more sensitive to O(3) than soybean, was found to produce a significantly greater yield in EDU-treated than non-treated plots, unlike a companion planting of 'Williams 82' soybean which did not exhibit the differential response. The results indicated that the specific EDU protocol used in the soybean experiments is capable of detecting an ozone effect in a legume. Moreover, in a concurrent greenhouse experiment the yield of EDU-treated Sanilac white bean was not significantly different from non-treated plants in the absence of ozone pollution. In a dose-response field experiment during a year of unusually high O(3) pollution, yield of 'Williams 82' increased slightly with each EDU increment up to 500 ppm and decreased at 1000 ppm. The difference between non-treated and EDU-treated plants, however, was not statistically significant. There was no evidence to suggest that the EDU concentration (500 ppm) used in previous soybean experiments reduced seed yield. Fortuitously, the tolerance of commercially-grown soybean to ambient ozone is at least partially conditioned by the practce of not irrigating the crop. The New Jersey results are in agreement with reports from Maryland, Georgia and Tennessee in which an adverse impact of ambient O(3) was not found in soybean, but contrary to a current predictive model.  相似文献
